Wind Advisory in Effect for Arco, Mud Lake Desert and Upper Snake River Plain Through Thursday Evening
A Wind Advisory issued by the National Weather Service in Pocatello remains in effect through 9:00 p.m. MDT Thursday, May 15, covering the Arco/Mud Lake Desert and the Upper Snake River Plain in eastern Idaho.
Forecasters are calling for southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph through the advisory period. Residents and travelers across the affected zones are urged to take precautions as the strong winds create hazardous conditions on roadways and area waterways.
Driving and Boating Hazards Expected
High-profile vehicles — including semi-trucks, recreational vehicles, and vehicles towing trailers — face the greatest risk on area highways, including stretches of Highway 20 and other exposed corridors across the Snake River Plain. Wind gusts at these speeds can reduce vehicle stability and make lane control difficult, particularly for drivers operating larger rigs.
Residents are also advised to secure any outdoor objects that could be displaced by the gusting winds. Unsecured items such as lawn furniture, signage, or lightweight equipment can become projectiles in conditions like these, posing a risk to property and personal safety.
Boaters planning to be on area lakes should be aware that strong winds will produce rough wave conditions capable of overturning small watercraft. Officials recommend that boaters exercise extra caution or delay outings until conditions improve after the advisory expires Thursday evening.
What Comes Next
The Wind Advisory is scheduled to expire at 9:00 p.m. MDT on Thursday, May 15. Bonneville County residents should monitor updated forecasts from the National Weather Service as conditions evolve. Drivers heading into the Arco area or across open stretches of the Upper Snake River Plain are advised to check road conditions before departing and reduce speed if gusty conditions are encountered.
Residents are also reminded that emergency situations can develop quickly during high-wind events. For other active public safety situations in the region, the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office is currently seeking public assistance in locating a missing teenager, and authorities recently resolved a standoff on Truckersville Road off I-86.
