Standoff on Truckersville Road off I-86

Armed Standoff Near I-86 in Chubbuck Ends Peacefully After Multi-Agency Response

A police standoff involving an armed and reportedly intoxicated woman closed a road near Interstate 86 in Chubbuck, Idaho, for several hours Wednesday afternoon before being resolved without injury.

The incident unfolded late in the afternoon on May 6 at the intersection of Truckersville Road and Curlew Road, off I-86 in Power County. The Power County Sheriff’s Office had received a report concerning a 33-year-old woman who was allegedly intoxicated and in possession of a firearm. Officers responded and attempted to make contact with the individual.

During the standoff, the woman discharged her firearm once, with the round striking the ground. No bystanders or law enforcement personnel were in the immediate area when the shot was fired, and no injuries resulted. Out of an abundance of caution, authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for residents in the surrounding neighborhood.

Multi-Agency Response Mobilized

The situation drew a significant law enforcement presence. Units from the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office, Idaho State Police, Fort Hall Police, Bureau of Land Management Rangers, Fort Hall Fire, and Power County EMS all converged on the scene. Traffic cones were placed blocking Truckersville Road, and officers redirected drivers through Curlew Road. Several school buses and civilian vehicles were backed up at the intersection while the standoff continued.

Authorities also reached out to the woman’s family, who came to the scene and assisted in de-escalating the situation. Their involvement proved pivotal — officers were ultimately able to remove the firearm without further incident, and no shots were fired by law enforcement at any point during the standoff.

The woman was not taken into custody by police. Instead, family members transported her for mental health evaluation and services. The Power County Sheriff’s Office indicated it would not be releasing additional information about the individual at this time.

Scene Cleared by Late Afternoon

The road closure was lifted at approximately 4:20 p.m., when officers removed the traffic cones and reopened Truckersville Road to normal traffic. Pocatello police confirmed the situation had been fully resolved and the area cleared.

The peaceful resolution of the standoff — which involved a live round being fired and a multi-agency mobilization — reflects the type of coordinated response law enforcement agencies in southeastern Idaho have developed for volatile mental health situations. The involvement of family members in de-escalating the confrontation avoided what could have been a far more serious outcome.

Incidents involving armed individuals in mental health crises have prompted ongoing discussions statewide about how first responders handle such calls. For context on other recent public safety incidents across the region, a Power County father and daughter were recently recognized by Idaho State Police for helping save lives following a reservoir crash on Arrowrock Road, and emergency crews earlier responded to a structure fire near Ammon, underscoring the active pace of public safety calls across eastern Idaho.

What Comes Next

The Power County Sheriff’s Office has closed its public comment on the incident for now, declining to release further details about the woman’s identity or the specific circumstances leading up to the standoff. It remains unclear whether any charges will be filed in connection with the discharge of the firearm or the broader incident. Officials have not indicated any follow-up press conference or formal statement is planned. Residents in the Truckersville and Curlew Road area can expect normal traffic conditions to continue following the all-clear. Anyone with relevant information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Power County Sheriff’s Office directly.
