Democrat Jan Brown and Republican incumbent Dave Lent made their final appeals to voters one day before the election in Idaho Senate District 33.
Lent cited tax reductions approved by the Idaho Legislature as economic relief. He said he had served eight years in the Senate and that taxes were reduced for Idaho citizens during five of those years.
“The number that we have reduced taxes to is $2.8 billion – a lot of that coming from income taxes,” Lent said.
Lent also said Idaho ranks among the bottom five states for property taxes per person in the United States.
Brown called for changes to the homeowners’ exemption and broader tax reform. She proposed increasing the exemption from its current $125,000 to $200,000 and indexing it to inflation.
“One of them would be addressing the homeowner exemption to make sure that we raised that exemption from its current $125,000 up to $200,000,” Brown said.
Brown also called for changes involving property, income and sales taxes. She referenced the 1980s while discussing tax balance.
The candidates’ full interviews covered immigration, health care and education.
