Idaho prosecutors have connected the killing of Thomas Waddell to a web of lies constructed by his girlfriend, who staged a home invasion to conceal her actions.
Waddell, a retired father and grandfather, was found shot to death inside an apartment. Law enforcement officers discovered his body wrapped in trash bags, duct tape, and a comforter. The scene showed no signs of a robbery; valuable items, including firearms and cash, remained untouched at the location.
Investigators determined that Waddell had likely been dead for more than 12 hours before his girlfriend contacted emergency services. During the frantic 911 call, dispatchers heard a gunshot. The caller claimed two masked intruders had committed a home invasion, but police quickly realized the account did not align with physical evidence.
Detectives interrogated the woman while she was hospitalized. During questioning, investigators uncovered that she maintained a secret relationship with another man. Authorities also identified a fabricated scheme involving a fake bank investigator, which prosecutors stated was part of a broader pattern of deception.
The motive for the murder appears rooted in this relationship built on falsehoods. The absence of video footage showing intruders fleeing the scene further undermined the girlfriend’s initial story. Police concluded that the staged emergency call was an attempt to divert suspicion from her involvement in Waddell’s death.
