The Idaho Falls City Council confirmed Mark Hagedorn as the inaugural director of the city’s newly established Finance Department on September 14, 2026.
Council members created the standalone department just days earlier, separating financial oversight from its previous administrative home. The move centralizes fiscal management under a single executive leader responsible for accounting policy, risk mitigation, and financial reporting accuracy.
Hagedorn brings more than a decade of municipal experience to the role. He joined the City of Idaho Falls in 2012 as Lead Accountant, advancing to City Controller from 2016 to 2022. Most recently, he served as city treasurer and finance manager within the Municipal Services Department.
Before his public service career began, Hagedorn worked as a senior auditor for an Arizona-based public accounting firm. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Brigham Young University-Idaho.
Mayor Lisa Burtenshaw emphasized that Hagedorn’s background aligns with the city’s goals for fiscal discipline. She noted his appointment supports ongoing efforts to ensure accountability and transparency in municipal operations.
“Mr. Hagedorn will be an asset as we continue our focus on accountability, transparency and financial sustainability within the City,” Burtenshaw said.
Hagedorn expressed appreciation for the promotion, noting he aims to build upon the work of existing staff members.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve the City in this new role and to continue building on the foundation laid by our finance team,” Hagedorn said.
The restructuring reflects a broader trend among Idaho municipalities seeking to strengthen internal controls and streamline budget processes. By elevating the finance function to a department level, city leaders aim to improve long-term financial planning and reporting standards.
Hagedorn’s new responsibilities include certifying the accuracy of all financial reports and providing strategic analysis to support council decision-making. The position effectively serves as the city’s chief financial officer.
