Fall River Rural Electric Cooperative is backing a new power generation facility in northern Idaho as part of a broader effort to secure reliable electricity for the region. The cooperative announced its partnership in the project through PNGC Power, a generation and transmission cooperative that serves member utilities across the Pacific Northwest.
The proposed plant is designed to operate as one of the most efficient and lowest-emitting natural gas-fired facilities in the region, according to project details. Beyond immediate generation capacity, the technology includes a pathway for hydrogen blending—potentially up to 50 percent hydrogen fuel mix—as technology and infrastructure develop in the coming years.
Meeting Growing Demand
Fall River Electric identified the need for this strategic investment more than three years ago, recognizing that current and future power demands across eastern Idaho and southwestern Montana require dependable generation sources. Recent events underscored that urgency: severe Northwest storms, extreme temperatures, and reduced hydropower output from traditional sources have strained the regional grid while electricity consumption continues climbing.

PNGC Power, the generation cooperative coordinating the project, serves a network of member utilities stretching across multiple states.
