Weapon Discharge at Idaho National Laboratory Sends Employee to Hospital

An employee at the Idaho National Laboratory was transported to a local hospital Friday after a weapon the employee was carrying discharged, according to an INL spokeswoman. The incident, which occurred June 5, prompted an investigation that remained ongoing as of the time of the report.

INL spokeswoman Lori A. McNamara confirmed the employee was “transported by ambulance to a local hospital.” Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center confirmed it received a patient from INL that Friday. The employee was subsequently treated and released, though further details about the individual’s condition were not made available.

Key Details Withheld Pending Investigation

Laboratory officials declined to disclose whether the discharge was accidental, nor did they specify where on the sprawling federal research campus the incident took place or what time it occurred. The identity of the employee, their role at the facility, and the current alert status of the laboratory following the incident were all unavailable at the time of publication.

INL is one of the largest employers in eastern Idaho, with a workforce exceeding 6,000 people. The facility spans a significant portion of Bonneville County and serves as the nation’s leading nuclear energy research laboratory, operating under the U.S. Department of Energy. The size and security requirements of the campus mean that a number of personnel are authorized to carry weapons while on duty.

What Comes Next

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the weapon discharge is underway. INL officials have not indicated a timeline for releasing further findings or indicated whether any other personnel were involved. As one of Idaho’s most prominent federal installations, incidents at INL typically draw scrutiny from both Department of Energy oversight bodies and local law enforcement.
