The United States Navy welcomed its newest Virginia-class submarine into active service April 25 during a formal commissioning ceremony at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut.
The USS Idaho entered the fleet at 11 a.m. Eastern time, completing a multi-year process that began with the start of construction in August 2020. The commissioning represents the final step in bringing the attack submarine from shipyard to operational deployment.
Five-Year Journey to Active Duty
The submarine’s path to commissioning included five major milestones. Following the August 2020 construction start, the vessel was christened in March 2024. The christening was followed by extensive sea trials designed to verify the submarine’s combat readiness and performance capabilities.
After successfully completing all required testing protocols, the Navy accepted the USS Idaho in December 2025. The April commissioning ceremony marked the vessel’s official entry into the Navy’s strategic submarine force.
Governor Addresses Crew at Ceremony
Idaho Governor Brad Little attended the Connecticut ceremony and spoke to the assembled crew about their new role representing the state.
“To the crew of the USS Idaho, today you become more than sailors, you become ambassadors,” Little said during his remarks. “Ambassadors for Idaho. Idaho is a state with character and enduring values. Our people are resilient, independent, and deeply committed to one another. In Idaho, hard work isn’t just expected, it’s a way of life.”
The governor’s presence underscored the connection between the submarine and the state whose name it carries into service.
Virginia-Class Capabilities
The USS Idaho joins the Navy’s Virginia-class submarine fleet, which represents the service’s newest generation of fast-attack submarines. These vessels are designed for a wide range of missions including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface ship operations, intelligence gathering, and special forces support.
Virginia-class submarines feature advanced stealth technology, improved sonar systems, and enhanced weapons capabilities compared to earlier submarine classes. The submarines are built to operate in both deep ocean and coastal environments.
What Comes Next
With commissioning complete, the USS Idaho will begin its operational career as part of the Atlantic Fleet submarine force. The vessel will undergo additional training cycles with its crew before receiving deployment assignments. The submarine’s home port and specific operational duties will be determined by Navy fleet requirements and strategic priorities in the coming months.
