Semi and Tanker Crash Causes Blockage on I84

Semi and Tanker Crash Sparks Fire, Blocks Lanes on I-84 in Cassia County, Idaho

CASSIA COUNTY, Idaho — A semi-truck and tanker trailer crash ignited a fire and partially blocked Interstate 84 near Heyburn in the early morning hours of Thursday, May 1, 2026, prompting a multi-agency emergency response and drawing the attention of Idaho State Police and multiple fire departments across Cassia County.

According to Idaho State Police, the incident occurred at approximately 1:50 a.m. near milepost 217 on I-84 Eastbound. Two 37-year-old men from El Paso, Texas were traveling eastbound in a 2025 International semi-truck hauling an empty 2008 Brenner tanker trailer when the vehicle departed the roadway off the right shoulder, striking a guardrail and a portion of a concrete wall.

The semi and trailer then crossed I-84 and struck the north side of the overpass wall at N 950 E before catching fire, partially blocking the left lane of the eastbound corridor.

Both Occupants Exit Safely, No Injuries Reported

Despite the severity of the crash, both occupants escaped without injury. The driver was able to exit the cab and reach a safe location. The passenger, who was in the sleeper portion of the cab at the time of the collision, also exited without assistance. Idaho State Police confirmed the driver was wearing a seatbelt. No injuries were reported.

Multiple surrounding fire departments arrived on scene shortly after the initial call and extinguished the flames without further incident. As a precaution, both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-84 were initially blocked to allow emergency personnel to assess whether the tanker posed any additional hazard. Once it was determined the tanker trailer was empty and presented no further threat, westbound lanes were reopened along with the right lane of eastbound I-84. As of the time of the initial report, the left lane of eastbound I-84 remained blocked while crews worked to remove the semi and trailer from the scene.

Motorists traveling in the area are encouraged to check 511.idaho.gov for the latest updates on lane conditions and traffic flow along the affected stretch of I-84.

Multi-Agency Response Coordinates Rapid Containment

The scale of the response underscored the coordinated effort local and regional agencies can mount when a major highway incident unfolds in Southern Idaho. Idaho State Police District 4 was assisted by the Declo Fire Department, East End Fire Department, North Cassia Fire Department, Cassia Medics, Declo QRU, Idaho Transportation Department, Cassia County Sheriff’s Department, Heyburn Police Department, and the Minidoka County Sheriff’s Department.

The rapid mobilization of area fire departments and emergency medical services helped contain the blaze and ensure both occupants were accounted for before the situation could escalate. The cooperation among agencies spanning multiple county jurisdictions reflects the kind of mutual aid agreements that prove critical in remote stretches of Southern Idaho highway where resources from a single jurisdiction may not be sufficient to manage a large-scale incident.

I-84 is one of the primary east-west commercial freight corridors in the state, connecting the greater Twin Falls and Burley areas with broader regional markets. Any significant blockage on the interstate carries the potential to disrupt commercial traffic and supply chains across Southern Idaho and beyond. Emergency crews worked to restore traffic flow as quickly as possible given the extent of the damage and the need to safely remove the wrecked vehicles.

Public safety agencies across Bonneville County and East Idaho have dealt with a busy stretch of incidents in recent weeks. Separately, multiple units responded to a structure fire near Ammon, and the community recently came together for the Battle of the Badges blood drive, raising awareness of critical donation needs ahead of the 100 Deadliest Days of summer driving.

What Comes Next

Idaho State Police District 4, which serves Blaine, Camas, Cassia, Gooding, Jerome, Lincoln, Minidoka, and Twin Falls Counties, is overseeing the ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash. Investigators will examine factors including road conditions, vehicle mechanical status, and driver fatigue as potential contributing elements.

The Idaho Transportation Department is expected to assess any structural damage to the overpass wall at N 950 E as part of routine post-incident review. Drivers passing through the Heyburn area on I-84 should continue to monitor 511.idaho.gov for real-time updates until all lanes are fully reopened and the damaged stretch of roadway is cleared and inspected.
