Search and Rescue Rider Airlifted After Two-Vehicle Collision on Mountain Pass

Sawtooth Valley, Idaho

A 27-year-old Idaho City man operating a Boise Search and Rescue unit motorcycle sustained serious injuries Thursday afternoon after a collision on a mountain highway in Boise County.

The crash occurred at 12:19 p.m. on Idaho Highway 21 near milepost 31 when the rider’s orange 2025 KTM motorcycle was struck by a blue Ford Bronco traveling in the opposite direction. A 46-year-old Medford, Oregon resident was driving the Bronco.

The motorcycle rider was airlifted by helicopter to a regional hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Medical personnel reported the rider was wearing a helmet at the time of impact. The Bronco driver sustained minor injuries or no injuries, and was wearing a seatbelt.

Emergency responders closed Idaho Highway 21 for approximately 24 minutes while crews worked the scene and prepared for the medical evacuation. Idaho City Police Department, Boise County Search and Rescue, and Air St. Lukes assisted in the response.

Idaho State Police are conducting the investigation into the cause of the collision. The agency has not released additional details regarding visibility conditions, vehicle speeds, or other contributing factors at this time.
