A new Rigby-based business is offering an alternative to cardboard boxes for residents moving homes in eastern Idaho. Teton Tote Rental, owned by Trace Barney and his wife Sarah, began operations earlier this year to serve local relocation needs with durable, reusable containers.
Service Details and Pricing
The company delivers clean, commercial-grade moving totes directly to customers’ doors. Residents in Bonneville, Jefferson, and Madison counties receive free delivery. A small fee applies for deliveries to surrounding areas including Pocatello, Ashton, Blackfoot, and Victor.
Customers can select packages ranging from 20 to 100 totes through the company’s online platform. Prices vary depending on the package size. Each rental includes a dolly to assist with transport. The totes are delivered on a date chosen by the customer and picked up after use.
Barney emphasized the quality of the inventory. “These totes aren’t just the simple ones. We actually have the commercial-grade ones,” Barney said.
Cleaning and Sustainability
The company markets its service as 100 percent eco-friendly, aiming to reduce waste associated with single-use moving supplies. After each rental, the containers undergo a rigorous cleaning process.
“We clean them; every single one of them is sanitized. We pressure wash them and personally scrub each one,” Barney said.
The service targets various moving scenarios, including local residential moves, apartment transitions, college relocations, office moves, decluttering projects, and home remodeling efforts.
Business Origins
Trace Barney founded the company after relocating from Utah to Rigby to be closer to family. He used tote rentals for his own move and found them superior to traditional cardboard boxes. Market research indicated no similar business existed in eastern Idaho at the time.
The Barneys purchased their initial inventory to use for their own relocation, effectively making themselves the company’s first customers. The rental model addresses a common logistical issue: buying 30 or 40 totes creates storage problems once the move is complete. Renting eliminates the need to store or dispose of large quantities of plastic containers.
Tote rental services have gained popularity in the eastern United States but remained largely absent from east Idaho until this launch. Trace Barney’s brother-in-law, Adam Cutler, is also associated with the family business network.
Gift Program for Professionals
Teton Tote Rental offers a “Gift Program” designed for real estate agents, apartment communities, employers, and property managers. Participants pay a monthly charge to gift a 20-tote, two-week rental to one client per month.
Program members also receive a 20 percent discount code to share with their clients. As part of the arrangement, real estate agents can have their logos and contact information placed on the totes, providing visibility during the moving process.
