Portneuf Medical Center celebrates expansion of care through new affiliation with Huntsman Cancer Institute

Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello Formally Affiliates with Huntsman Cancer Institute

POCATELLO, Idaho — After nearly two decades of effort, Portneuf Medical Center has officially entered a formal affiliation with the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, a partnership that administrators say will meaningfully expand cancer care options for residents of the Portneuf Valley without requiring most patients to leave the region.

The two organizations marked the milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday evening at PMC’s Pocatello campus, bringing together physicians and administrators from both institutions. Portneuf Medical Center becomes the seventh hospital in the nation — and the first in Idaho — to affiliate with Huntsman Cancer Institute, which is based at the University of Utah and is widely regarded as one of the premier cancer research and treatment facilities in the Intermountain West.

What the Affiliation Means for Patients

Officials from both organizations were clear that the partnership is not designed to funnel Portneuf patients south to Utah. Rather, the goal is to bring Huntsman’s clinical depth and research resources into the Pocatello facility’s day-to-day operations.

“Our goal is the opposite: to support and strengthen local teams and minimize the need to travel whenever we can,” said Dr. Sachin Apte, chief clinical officer at Huntsman Cancer Institute, in remarks at the ceremony. When patients do require highly specialized treatment available only in Salt Lake City, Apte said the two teams will coordinate closely to ensure smooth continuity of care upon their return home.

Dr. Michael Callaghan, a radiation oncologist at Portneuf, described the affiliation as placing the Portneuf Cancer Center under Huntsman’s broader clinical umbrella — a distinction that changes the working relationship between the two staffs from collegial neighbors to integrated teammates. That shift, he said, unlocks access to training resources, clinical procedures, and shared knowledge that Huntsman had previously been unable to extend outside its formal network.

Patients seeking cancer treatment in eastern and southeastern Idaho stand to benefit from expanded specialist consultations, enhanced treatment protocols, and more direct coordination with one of the region’s leading oncology institutions — all without necessarily leaving Pocatello.

A 20-Year Road to Partnership

The affiliation did not come together quickly. Callaghan told the crowd gathered Tuesday that the idea of formally partnering with Huntsman first took shape nearly 20 years ago, fueled by optimism and a shared commitment to improving cancer care in the area.

Progress, however, proved elusive. Callaghan likened the journey to the Greek myth of Sisyphus — the figure condemned to push a boulder up a hill only to watch it roll back down, repeatedly and without end. Moments when a formal agreement seemed within reach gave way to unforeseen obstacles, and the partnership had to be rebuilt from the ground up on more than one occasion.

What ultimately kept the effort alive, Callaghan said, was a combination of persistence and the straightforward desire to deliver better outcomes for cancer patients in the community. “Each time, we had a choice,” he said, describing the repeated setbacks as tests of commitment rather than signals to abandon the goal.

Apte framed Tuesday’s ceremony not as a culmination but as a starting point. “Today’s ribbon-cutting is not a finish line; it’s a beginning of a deeper collaboration, shared learning and a stronger cancer care network for this community,” he said.

For southeastern Idaho — a region that has historically faced challenges in retaining specialty medical services close to home — the affiliation represents a notable expansion of locally accessible care. The agreement could also carry broader economic implications for the Pocatello health care market, as strengthened oncology services may reduce the number of patients who travel out of state for treatment. A separate ongoing contract dispute between PMC and Regence insurance has underscored the financial pressures facing the region’s health care providers, making new clinical partnerships like this one a key part of the hospital’s long-term strategy.

What Comes Next

With the affiliation now official, both PMC and Huntsman Cancer Institute are expected to begin deeper integration of clinical protocols, staff training programs, and patient coordination systems. Officials did not specify a timeline for individual program rollouts, but Callaghan indicated that the knowledge-sharing benefits would begin flowing relatively quickly now that the formal relationship is in place. Community members seeking information about cancer services at the Portneuf Cancer Center can contact the hospital directly for details on available treatments and how the Huntsman affiliation may affect care options going forward.
