East Idaho Baseball, Softball and Track Teams Enter Playoff Season

Spring Sports Reach Postseason Across Eastern Idaho

EASTERN IDAHO — Baseball district titles have been claimed, softball tournaments are underway, and local track and field athletes are preparing for this month’s state meets across Idaho, as the spring sports calendar enters its most competitive stretch of the season.

Photos captured by photographers from EastIdahoSports.com over the past week document the action from across the region, offering a snapshot of the playoff push underway in Bonneville County and surrounding communities.

In softball, the Preston Indians entered district tournament play riding momentum from a conference championship. Junior Averie Madsen drew attention after hitting a home run against Bear Lake, with her teammates greeting her at the plate in one of the week’s standout images. Though Preston fell to the Bears in that contest, the Indians had already secured the conference title and home-field advantage heading into the 4A District 5 tournament.

The Bear Lake Bears made their presence known in that same game. Senior Peyten Crockett was welcomed to the plate by teammates following her own home run during Bear Lake’s victory over Preston. For Preston’s Ellie Keller, the game was no small showing despite the loss — Keller homered twice and drove in three runs during Bear Lake’s 14-11 win at Bear Lake High School.

Baseball District Titles Decided; Track Season Builds Toward State

On the baseball diamond, district title games in the 5A District 5 tournament produced clear winners and tough exits. Century Diamondbacks pitcher Derek McCasland took the mound in the semifinal against Pocatello, but the Diamondbacks fell to the Thunder. Pocatello’s Gentry MacRory made a highlight-reel diving catch during the Thunder’s 15-4 victory over Century — one of the more memorable defensive plays of the week.

Pocatello then fell to Preston in the district championship game, with the Indians claiming the baseball title to match their softball conference crown — a strong showing for the Preston program across multiple spring sports.

Over in the Rigby Trojans‘ softball program, third baseman Ali Good was photographed recording an out from her knee during a doubleheader against the Highland Rams, a moment that captured the competitive energy of district play. Good collected a hit in her only at-bat during that twin bill. Highland has been one of the region’s top programs this spring, recently sweeping Thunder Ridge to win the 6A District 4-5-6 championship.

Track and field athletes are also entering crunch time as the spring season winds toward state championship meets. Girls from Pocatello, Highland, and Century competed in the hurdles during a city track meet held at Pocatello High School’s Lookout Credit Union Field, with boys athletes following suit in their own hurdle events. The city meet served as a key tune-up for local competitors as regional and state qualifying races approach later this month.

The photography featured in this week’s roundup was captured by Kalama Hines and Kyle Riley of EastIdahoSports.com, whose work documents the depth of athletic talent across the eastern Idaho region.

Readers can vote for their favorite photo of the week through the public Facebook group East Idaho News – Sports. Voting closes Wednesday at noon, with the winning image selected as the group’s header photo for the following week.

As communities across Bonneville County and eastern Idaho look toward a busy May, spring sports are providing no shortage of memorable moments. Idaho Falls is also wrapping up a citywide cleanup effort this week, giving communities a chance to refresh ahead of the summer season.
