The National Weather Service office in Pocatello issued a Heat Advisory Friday afternoon, warning residents across a large portion of Idaho — including the Upper Snake River Plain and Bonneville County — of dangerously high temperatures expected to reach up to 103 degrees.
The advisory, issued at 2:32 p.m. MDT on August 1, remained in effect through midnight MDT on August 2. Forecasters cautioned that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to serious heat-related illness.

The advisory stretched across a wide geographic footprint, encompassing the Challis and Pahsimeroi Valleys, Lost River Valley, Wood River Foothills, Beaverhead-Lemhi Highlands, Teton Valley, Eastern Magic Valley, Shoshone and Lava Beds area, Arco and Mud Lake Desert, Bear Lake Valley, the Franklin and Eastern Oneida Region, the Lower Snake River Plain, Marsh and Arbon Highlands, the Raft River Region, the Southern Hills and Albion Mountains, and the Upper Snake River Plain — covering communities throughout East Idaho.

High temperatures also put added strain on outdoor infrastructure. Idaho Falls is currently undergoing a major lighting and sidewalk improvement project along the Yellowstone Highway corridor, and construction crews working in direct sun face heightened risk during heat events like this one.
