The National Weather Service office in Pocatello issued a freeze warning late Sunday evening for portions of eastern Idaho. The alert, released at 7:29 p.m. MDT on October 11, warns residents and agricultural operators to prepare for sub-freezing temperatures.
Forecasters expect lows to drop to approximately 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The hazardous conditions are scheduled to take effect at 3 a.m. Monday, October 12, and will remain in force until 9 a.m. that same morning.
The warning covers specific regions including the Eastern Magic Valley, the Shoshone/Lava Beds area, and the Arco/Mud Lake Desert. These zones correspond to several counties in south-central Idaho where frost can develop rapidly overnight.
Agricultural producers in the affected areas face potential damage to crops and sensitive vegetation. The National Weather Service noted that unprotected outdoor plumbing is also at risk of freezing and bursting during this window.
Residents are advised to take precautions before the early morning hours when temperatures will be lowest. Covering plants, draining hoses, and insulating exposed pipes can help mitigate property damage associated with sudden cold snaps in late autumn.
