Man on most wanted list identified after Tuesdays police presence at Sunnyside Acres in Idaho Falls

Bonneville County Most Wanted Man Arrested After Barricade Standoff at Idaho Falls Mobile Home Park

IDAHO FALLS — Authorities have identified the man taken into custody following a significant police presence at the Sunnyside Acres mobile home park on Tuesday as Gustavo Chavez, 30, who was listed on the Bonneville County most wanted list at the time of his arrest.

Idaho Falls Police Chief Bryce Johnson confirmed Chavez’s identity and said he was booked into the Bonneville County Jail on Tuesday, May 26, with a $50,000 bond. If convicted on the current charges, he faces up to five years in prison and $50,000 in fines.

Barricade Situation Prompts Shelter-in-Place Order

Idaho Falls Police officers, working alongside the United States Marshals Task Force, executed a search warrant at a residence on West Elwood Drive in the Sunnyside Acres neighborhood. Chavez had barricaded himself inside the home, prompting officers to issue a shelter-in-place order for the surrounding area while they worked to resolve the situation. Chavez ultimately surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident. A second individual was detained at the scene but is not believed to have been charged. The specific reason for U.S. Marshals Task Force involvement has not been disclosed by authorities.

Chavez had been wanted on a felony probation violation warrant stemming from an original charge of eluding police — a charge that traces back to a high-speed chase through Idaho Falls and into Bingham County in late April.

A High-Speed Chase Reaching 113 MPH

According to court documents, the chain of events began on April 24 when an Idaho Falls Police officer was monitoring a live video call between a jail inmate and Chavez. During the call, Chavez was seen preparing to leave a home on Elswood Drive in the Sunnyside Acres area and was heard talking about loading new tires onto his gray Cadillac sedan and attaching a trailer hitch as he prepared to leave town. The officer, aware Chavez had an active arrest warrant, drove to the neighborhood and waited.

When Chavez drove past in the Cadillac — wearing the same black shirt, gold chain, and black hat visible in the jail video call — the officer fell in behind him. Additional units were summoned to box in the vehicle at the intersection of Elswood Drive and West Sunnyside Road. Chavez allegedly maneuvered between the patrol cars and surrounding traffic, running a stop sign and driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of West Sunnyside Road before turning south onto Professional Way.

During the pursuit, an officer pulled alongside Chavez’s Cadillac intending to execute a PIT maneuver. Chavez braked abruptly, causing the officer to rear-end the vehicle instead. Both cars left the roadway and entered a drainage ditch running parallel to railroad tracks before returning to the pavement and continuing south. A second officer took over the chase, following Chavez south on South 15th West. After Chavez ran a stop sign at 65th South, the pursuit was called off when he crossed into Bingham County near 1400 North. Officers reached speeds of up to 113 mph during the chase.

Later that same day, Chavez’s Cadillac was located unoccupied on Arctic Avenue near Atlantic Street in Idaho Falls. A K9 unit alerted to the rear passenger area of the vehicle, and a subsequent search turned up mail, handwritten letters, and notebooks bearing Chavez’s name — enough to support a warrant for his arrest. That warrant was ultimately served nearly a month later at Sunnyside Acres on Tuesday.

History of Eluding Law Enforcement

Court filings indicate Chavez has not yet been assigned a public defender. The case is expected to proceed as the court appoints counsel.

This is not Chavez’s first brush with law enforcement in Bonneville County. Records show he was involved in two separate police-related incidents in 2019, including a case in which wanted individuals fled from officers and another involving a work-release escape.

Public safety cases like this one have drawn renewed attention to law enforcement resources across East Idaho. For context on local agency funding discussions, see the Rexburg Police Department’s recent bond measure, which returned to voters with a reduced price tag. Separately, a Rexburg arson case also highlighted active criminal enforcement efforts across the region.

What Comes Next

Chavez remains in the Bonneville County Jail on $50,000 bond. The court is expected to appoint a public defender, after which formal proceedings will advance. Bonneville County News will continue to follow the case as new developments emerge.
