Make-A-Wish Idaho Brings Annual Fundraising Walk Back to Idaho Falls This Weekend

Idaho Falls — Make-A-Wish Idaho is bringing its annual Walk For Wishes fundraiser back to Russ Freeman Park this Saturday, gathering community supporters for a one-mile walk aimed at raising $20,000 to help grant wishes for children facing critical illnesses across East Idaho.

The event takes place at Russ Freeman Park, located at 1290 Science Center Drive in Idaho Falls. Day-of registration opens at 9:30 a.m., with organizers asking participants to plan on arriving by 10 a.m. There is no entry fee to participate, though walkers who raise at least $100 toward the fundraising goal will receive an official event T-shirt. Those who wish to register ahead of time can do so at idaho.wish.org.

More Than 20 East Idaho Children Waiting for Wishes

Make-A-Wish Idaho is a nonprofit organization dedicated to granting wishes to children with critical illnesses. According to organizers, more than 20 children in the East Idaho region are currently waiting for their wish to be fulfilled. The $20,000 fundraising goal set for Saturday’s walk is expected to help grant approximately three of those wishes.

The types of wishes most commonly requested by Idaho children include trips to Hawaii and Disney World. Among the more unique wishes from local children are a trip to Japan, a chance to meet the Buffalo Bills, and a visit to a wildlife park in Kansas — a reminder that each wish reflects the individual hopes of a child navigating a serious health challenge.

Janie Best, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish Idaho, pointed to the organization’s long track record in the region. “Over the last 40 years, we’ve granted 159 wishes in Idaho Falls, 29 in Ammon and 63 in Rexburg,” Best said. She also emphasized the community value of the event itself, noting that the walk “gives us a chance to interact with the communities where we grant wishes.”

Family-Friendly Activities Planned Throughout the Morning

Saturday’s event is designed to be more than a fundraising walk. Attendees can expect speeches from wish families sharing their personal experiences, a performance by Idaho Falls High School cheerleaders, a kids’ zone, music from a DJ, and complimentary coffee and doughnuts. A charity motorcycle drive-by is also planned as part of the morning’s activities ahead of the walk itself.

The walk covers approximately one mile, making it accessible for participants of all ages and fitness levels. Organizers are encouraging families, community groups, businesses, and individuals to sign up and help reach the $20,000 target.

For Idaho Falls-area residents looking for volunteer and community engagement opportunities this summer, the Idaho Falls Humanitarian Center is also welcoming volunteers for the summer season, offering additional ways to give back to the community beyond a single event.

East Idaho has a strong tradition of community-driven charitable events. From outdoor recreation fundraisers like the Poky Paddle on the Portneuf River in Pocatello to local gatherings that honor the region’s history, Bonneville County residents regularly show up for causes that matter to their neighbors.

What Comes Next

Following Saturday’s Walk For Wishes, Make-A-Wish Idaho will continue its wish-granting efforts throughout the year for the more than 20 East Idaho children currently on its waiting list. Funds raised at the Idaho Falls event will be applied directly toward fulfilling those wishes. Community members unable to attend Saturday can still support the organization by visiting idaho.wish.org to make a donation or register for future events. Organizers have not yet announced the next scheduled fundraising event in the East Idaho area.
