A 42-year-old man from Illinois was arrested and transported to Rigby after investigators linked him to an online scheme involving a 13-year-old girl in Idaho, according to court records obtained by eastidahonews.com.
Jared Lee Depoister, of Edgewood, Illinois, faces felony charges for enticing a child over the internet. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on September 3 and appeared before a judge later that day. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 17.
Investigation Begins With Father’s Discovery
The case originated in late May when the victim’s father discovered suspicious activity on his daughter’s phone. He found a contact listed as “JJ” and observed that the individual had sent explicit images of his genitals to the minor, according to court documents.
A detective with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was assigned to the investigation on May 28. During the inquiry, detectives learned that the victim had met the suspect on Snapchat. The man introduced himself as “Jake” and claimed to be between 20 and 23 years old. He also told the girl he lived three states away.
Investigators traced communications back to a TextNow account, which masked the sender’s actual phone number. Court records indicate that the suspect sent at least four sexually explicit videos depicting intercourse. Additionally, the man allegedly asked the victim to send a photo of another young girl and inquired if he could record them having sexual intercourse.
Digital Forensics Lead to Suspect
On June 1, the victim underwent a forensic interview. Detectives subsequently obtained a warrant for the TextNow account, which allowed them to identify Jared Depoister as the user behind the “Jake” persona.
Investigators noted that Depoister likely used photographs taken more than ten years ago to appear younger than his actual age of 42. Despite the extensive digital communication, court documents do not indicate that an in-person meeting between the suspect and the victim ever occurred.
A nationwide extradition warrant was issued for Depoister. He was apprehended in Illinois and brought back to Idaho, where he was processed into the Jefferson County Jail system on September 3.
Court Proceedings and Potential Penalties
During his initial court appearance on September 3, a bond of $100,000 was set for Depoister. He has been assigned a public defender to represent him in the case.
If convicted of felony enticing a child over the internet, Depoister faces significant penalties under Idaho law. The charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 15 years and potential court fines up to $50,000.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office continues to monitor the case as it moves through the judicial process. Community safety advocates often highlight the importance of parental awareness regarding social media platforms like Snapchat and anonymous texting services such as TextNow, which can be exploited by predators attempting to conceal their identities.
