Idaho State’s ICCU Dome Unveils New Security Features, Enhanced Fan Amenities for Season Opener

Idaho State University’s ICCU Dome is preparing for its football season with a substantial exterior renovation that blends tighter security protocols with expanded recreational and dining options for spectators.

The construction project has transformed the north side of the arena, relocating the main ticket entrance approximately 100 feet from its original position and establishing a new patio area designed to keep fans engaged during games. The upgrades mark a significant shift in how visitors will experience matchdays at the venue, which underwent its most recent major renovation about three years ago.

Security and Access Improvements

The redesigned entry system now features security gates equipped with walk-through metal detectors at all stadium entry points. Fans whose items trigger an alarm will proceed to a secondary screening table before entering the venue. The new north-side ticket booth replaces the previous entrance location, and the street running in front of it has been closed to vehicle traffic to create a safer pedestrian area.

The south-side ticket booth is being permanently closed, consolidating all entry traffic to the north side. To accommodate this change, the parking lot has been restriped to improve vehicle flow, and accessible parking spaces have been relocated to the eastern side of the stadium.

A significant policy shift allows fans to exit and re-enter the stadium during games—a departure from traditional no-re-entry rules at many venues. This flexibility is now possible thanks to the new security infrastructure.

Entertainment and Concession Expansion

Behind the new ticket booth and along the exterior perimeter fence, the university has constructed a new patio area designed to extend the fan experience beyond typical stadium seating. The space will feature cornhole and other yard games, creating an informal gathering spot for spectators.

Concession operations have been significantly expanded. A tent dedicated to Idaho State University apparel sales will anchor one section of the patio, while seating and eating areas provide space for fans to enjoy food and beverages. A beer garden tent will now stock not only alcoholic beverages but also concession items and non-alcoholic bottled drinks.

University officials indicated plans to continue adding concession options to the patio area as operations develop, suggesting the renovation represents an initial phase of longer-term enhancements.

Perspective on the Upgrades

Lowell Richards, the university’s associate vice president for auxiliary services and campus operations, framed the project as an opportunity to enhance the overall matchday environment. “It’s going to be a good change. I really do think it’s going to be a great change for our fans and fan experience,” Richards told East Idaho News. He added that while security was the primary driver of construction, the improvements opened possibilities for amenities beyond basic access control. “We’re adding security, (but) that gives us an opportunity to do something more than just add security,” he said.

First Test This Weekend

The new facilities will be tested during the Bengals’ season opener scheduled for Saturday, August 29, when Idaho State hosts Virginia Military Institute. The timing places the construction work on a tight schedule ahead of the game, giving the university minimal margin for any last-minute adjustments.

The renovation reflects broader trends in college athletics toward enhancing fan amenities and modernizing security infrastructure. By consolidating entry points, installing screening technology, and creating recreational spaces, Idaho State is positioning the ICCU Dome as a more contemporary venue while maintaining the capacity to manage attendance at a large facility.

The project also demonstrates the university’s willingness to invest in campus infrastructure that extends beyond athletics, as the patio area and enhanced concession operations contribute to the overall campus experience during major events.

What Comes Next

Beyond the season opener, the university will monitor how fans navigate the new layout and utilize the patio amenities. The completion of additional concession offerings and potential further upgrades to the space will likely depend on initial operational feedback and attendance patterns throughout the football season.
