An Oregon resident died Friday night after her vehicle rolled over on Sweet-Ola Highway in Gem County, Idaho.
Idaho State Police and the Gem County Sheriff’s Office responded to the single-vehicle crash around 6:30 p.m. near milepost 10. The victim was identified as a 63-year-old woman from Ontario, Oregon.
Crash Sequence
Investigators said the driver of a blue 1996 Toyota SUV lost control in the northbound lane. The vehicle drifted off the right shoulder before the driver attempted to correct the trajectory. That maneuver caused the SUV to cross into opposing traffic lanes, veer off the roadway again, and roll multiple times.
Emergency responders from Gem County Fire & EMS arrived to find the driver unrestrained. She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the impact. Officials confirmed she died at the scene.
Road Closure
Sweet-Ola Highway remained closed in both directions for approximately three hours while crews cleared debris and conducted their investigation. Traffic resumed normal flow after the roadway was deemed safe.
This incident adds to recent concerns regarding safety on rural Idaho corridors. Similar rollover events have occurred elsewhere in the region, including a crash on Highway 20 near Rexburg that sent an occupant to Idaho Falls Hospital. Another multi-vehicle collision on Highway 20 resulted in hospitalization for an Idaho Falls resident, highlighting the risks associated with high-speed travel on two-lane roads.
Authorities have not released further details regarding potential contributing factors such as weather conditions or driver impairment. The investigation remains ongoing.
