Idaho National Laboratory is taking the lead on a major modernization push for America’s nuclear power infrastructure, driven by surging electricity consumption from artificial intelligence operations and data centers.

The Department of Energy’s Light Water Reactor Sustainability Program is undergoing a comprehensive overhaul to strengthen the nation’s existing nuclear fleet while supporting future expansion. The initiative reflects mounting pressure on the grid as companies nationwide increase power demand for AI systems, cloud computing facilities, and reshored manufacturing operations.

INL’s role in directing the modernization effort positions the Idaho Falls-based laboratory at the center of the federal government’s strategy to meet clean energy demands without expanding fossil fuel reliance. The program encompasses both upgrading current reactor performance and preparing infrastructure for new nuclear capacity.

The modernization effort comes as nuclear technology continues gaining traction as a carbon-free alternative to meet exploding energy needs driven by artificial intelligence and industrial expansion across the United States.

What Comes Next: INL will continue advancing nuclear sustainability research and demonstration projects. Deployable Energy’s Unity Reactor reached a milestone at Idaho Falls Lab as part of broader small modular reactor development efforts aligned with federal energy goals.
