Idaho Department of Fish and Game is stocking multiple waterways across Southeast Idaho with nearly 10,000 catchable-sized rainbow trout during July, offering recreational fishing opportunities for anglers throughout the region.
The stocking initiative will distribute fish across seven locations in Bannock, Bear Lake, and Power counties. The releases are part of the agency’s routine fish management program designed to sustain fishing populations and provide public access to quality angling experiences.
Stocking Locations and Fish Counts
Cub River near Willow Flat Campground south of Preston will receive 750 rainbow trout. The campground sits at an elevation of 6,300 feet and serves as a popular access point for anglers in the region.
Kelly Park Pond’s upper section, located within Arthur Kelly Park in Soda Springs, will be stocked with 250 fish. This pond provides convenient fishing access for families and casual anglers in that community.
Mill Creek near the U.S. Forest Service Malad Summit Campground—approximately 15 miles north of Malad City—will receive 250 rainbow trout. The creek is situated in a scenic mountain setting that draws outdoor enthusiasts throughout the summer season.
Montpelier Creek, located a couple of miles from the town of Montpelier, will receive the largest single allocation at 1,000 rainbow trout. An additional 500 fish will be placed in Montpelier Rearing Pond, which sits at 6,500 feet elevation east of town, bringing the total Montpelier-area contribution to 1,500 fish.
Pebble Creek, situated 16 miles from Lava Hot Springs, will be stocked with 1,000 rainbow trout. The creek’s remote location in the high country makes it a destination for backcountry and adventure fishing.
Timing and Conditions
All stocking dates remain tentative and subject to change based on water conditions and weather patterns, according to Idaho Fish and Game. River flows, lake levels, and pond conditions will determine the final timing of each release to ensure the fish have optimal environments for survival and growth.
Anglers planning trips to these locations should contact regional Fish and Game offices or check the agency’s website for updates on stocking schedules, as heavy summer runoff or unexpected weather could delay some releases.
The July stocking comes as the region enters peak summer recreation season, with Independence Day celebrations and outdoor activities drawing residents and visitors to the mountains and river valleys across Bonneville County and surrounding areas. Many anglers combine fishing trips with camping at nearby Forest Service facilities and recreation areas.
What Comes Next
Anglers interested in taking advantage of the new stockings should monitor Idaho Fish and Game announcements for confirmed stocking dates at each location. Those planning visits to Willow Flat Campground, Arthur Kelly Park, Malad Summit area, Montpelier region, or Lava Hot Springs should verify current conditions before traveling, particularly if heavy precipitation affects mountain road access or water clarity.
Additional information about fishing regulations, license requirements, and specific stocking updates is available through the Idaho Department of Fish and Game Southeast Region office or online at the agency’s official website.
