Idaho Falls High School softball secured a critical conference victory Wednesday afternoon, defeating Hillcrest 14-11 in a dramatic finish that saw the Tigers hold off a late-inning rally by the Knights.
With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Idaho Falls senior pitcher Alyssa Smith faced Hillcrest senior Mya Weatherly in a high-stakes showdown. Smith struck out Weatherly, and a subsequent fly ball to center field sealed the win for the Tigers, who improved to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Hillcrest fell to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in conference.
Early Offensive Surge
Idaho Falls started strong in the first inning with a leadoff walk by junior Tabria Orgill. Two-out RBI singles from junior Kenley Butler and sophomore Millie Tuttle gave freshman starting pitcher Alayna Smith a 2-0 advantage.
Hillcrest answered immediately when Weatherly launched a two-run home run to straightaway center field in the bottom of the first, tying the game at 2-2.
The Tigers regained the lead in the second inning on an RBI single by senior Shea Salem, making it 3-2. Senior Olivia Cordon then extended the advantage with a three-run homer, putting Idaho Falls ahead 6-2.
Cordon, who had recently returned to the lineup after dealing with a quad strain, led the Tigers with four runs scored and tied for the team lead with three hits and three RBIs in the contest.
Knights Battle Back
Hillcrest chipped away at the deficit in the bottom of the third inning. An error by Alayna Smith allowed junior Raine Jarvis to score, and sophomore Marki Chilton followed with a solo home run, cutting Idaho Falls’ lead to 6-4.
The Tigers responded with another offensive outburst in the top of the fourth inning. Following a walk to Cordon, Butler hit a grounder off third base, freshman Reggi Hawker lined a fair ball, and Alayna Smith delivered a gapper that pushed the lead to 11-4.
Alayna Smith pitched through the fourth inning before giving way to her sister, Alyssa Smith, in relief. The elder Smith held Hillcrest scoreless in the fifth before the Knights mounted a furious rally in the sixth.
Hillcrest scored five runs in the sixth inning to pull within one run. Harley Jarvis drove in a run, Chilton added another RBI hit to cap her four-hit, four-RBI performance, and senior Sav Johnson connected on a two-run single. Junior Kenna Wallis added another single, making it 11-10 heading into the final inning.
Insurance Runs Prove Decisive
Idaho Falls manufactured three runs in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 14-10, providing crucial insurance for Alyssa Smith.
In the bottom of the seventh, Hillcrest loaded the bases with one out and scored a run to make it 14-11. But Smith worked through the heart of the Knights’ lineup, recording the strikeout of Weatherly and getting the final out to secure the conference victory.
What Comes Next
The win marks Idaho Falls’ first conference victory of the season and comes against a Hillcrest squad sitting above .500. Despite sitting three games under .500 overall, the Tigers demonstrated offensive firepower and late-game composure.
Idaho Falls relies heavily on the Smith sisters in the pitching rotation, with Alayna and Alyssa splitting duties throughout the season. The freshman-senior combination will continue to anchor the staff as the Tigers work to climb the conference standings.
Both teams return to conference play later this week as the high school softball season approaches the midpoint of the spring schedule.
