Idaho Falls, Bonneville County Honor Fallen Officers at Annual Memorial Ceremony

Law enforcement agencies in Bonneville County gathered Friday evening to pay tribute to officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities during the annual National Peace Officer Memorial Day observance.

The ceremony, held at the Bonneville County Courthouse, brought together representatives from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office and Idaho Falls Police Department to commemorate officers killed in the line of duty nationwide and throughout Idaho’s history.

Honoring 363 Fallen Officers Nationwide

This year’s memorial recognized 363 law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty across the United States during the past year. The observance, held each year on May 15, serves as a moment to remember not only those who fell but also the families they left behind.

Bonneville County Sheriff Sam Hulse addressed attendees, emphasizing the enduring responsibility to preserve the memory of fallen officers.

“It is our solemn obligation to never forget,” Hulse said during the ceremony. He noted the importance of remembering officers for who they were as individuals, not merely how they died.

Idaho’s Law Enforcement Losses Remembered

The service included a reading of names honoring Idaho’s 80 fallen law enforcement officers and seven K-9 partners who have died in service to the state. As each name was read, an electronic candle was placed in glass to represent each fallen hero.

Idaho Falls Police Chief Bryce Johnson also spoke to those gathered for the memorial.

Recognizing the Willingness to Serve

Sheriff Hulse acknowledged the ongoing risks faced by law enforcement personnel and the likelihood that officers will continue to lose their lives protecting their communities. He stressed the importance of honoring those who choose to serve despite these dangers.

“To me, that’s what matters. The fact that we still have men and women that answered the call,” Hulse said. “How different our society would be if we didn’t have people willing to do that.”

The sheriff described the annual ceremony as both challenging and cathartic for law enforcement personnel, providing an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by colleagues across the profession.

What Comes Next

National Peace Officer Memorial Day occurs annually on May 15, designated by Congress to honor federal, state, and local officers killed or disabled in the line of duty. The date falls during National Police Week, which brings increased recognition to the risks law enforcement personnel face and the sacrifices made by officers and their families throughout the country.

Bonneville County and Idaho Falls will continue to participate in this annual tradition, ensuring that the service and sacrifice of fallen officers remains part of the community’s collective memory.
