Regular gasoline prices in Idaho Falls climbed 17 cents overnight, pushing the local average above $5 per gallon. The sharp increase mirrors a similar jump in Pocatello and contributes to a statewide rise of 10 cents across Idaho, according to data from AAA.
The current statewide average sits at approximately $4.96 per gallon. While this figure remains roughly 30 cents below the record high of $5.25 established in 2022, the recent volatility has drawn attention from local financial experts.
Global Supply Disruptions Drive Costs
AAA attributes the price surge to global crude oil supply constraints rather than local factors such as refinery capacity, pipeline issues, or regional demand. Ongoing geopolitical conflict involving Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz are cited as primary contributors to the elevated costs.
Matthew Conde noted the rapidity of the change. “We saw the state average go up $0.10 just overnight, which is pretty shocking,” Conde said.
Crude oil prices have decreased from a peak of 105 dollars per barrel ten days ago to approximately 91 dollars per barrel currently. However, AAA indicates that these reductions in crude costs have a delayed effect on retail pump prices, meaning consumers may not see immediate relief at the station.
Diesel Hits Record High
The impact of global supply issues extends beyond passenger vehicles. Diesel fuel reached an all-time high of more than $6.50 per gallon, according to Robert Spendlove. “Diesel hit an all time high today of more than $6.50 a gallon,” Spendlove said.
Elevated diesel costs are expected to ripple through the broader economy. High transportation expenses for freight carriers can increase the cost of end products, including groceries, food delivery services, and package deliveries such as those from Amazon.
Budgeting Amid Volatility
The price jump represents a significant shift over recent months. Conde highlighted that current prices are 47 cents higher than they were a month ago and $1.44 higher than a year ago.
Economists from Zions Bank recommend that consumers tighten household budgets and utilize rewards programs to mitigate the impact of unpredictable fuel costs. With global supply issues persisting, experts suggest that price stability remains uncertain in the near term.
