Idaho Falls Federal Judge Faces Criminal Charges After Parking Lot Glasses Incident

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — A federal appellate judge is facing criminal charges following an April confrontation in an Idaho Falls parking lot that left another man without his eyeglasses, according to law enforcement.

Ryan Douglas Nelson, a sitting judge on the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, has been charged with two criminal counts stemming from the altercation. Authorities allege the dispute began over a parking space and escalated to the point where Nelson knocked the glasses from another man’s face, threw them across the asphalt, and then stepped on them.

What Investigators Say Happened

The incident reportedly unfolded in a parking lot in Idaho Falls. According to police, Nelson allegedly swiped the eyeglasses directly off the other man’s face during the confrontation, then flung the glasses across the pavement before stomping on them. The apparent trigger for the altercation was a dispute over a parking space.

Two criminal charges have been filed against Nelson in connection with the incident. Authorities have not publicly detailed what specific charges were brought, but the filing of criminal counts against a sitting federal judge represents an unusual and significant development in the East Idaho community.

A Sitting Federal Judge Under Scrutiny

Nelson serves on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, one of the largest and most prominent federal appellate courts in the United States. The 9th Circuit handles cases covering a broad swath of the western United States and has jurisdiction over Idaho. A criminal case against a sitting member of that bench is rare and draws attention not only locally but potentially from judicial oversight bodies at the federal level.

Federal judges are appointed through a rigorous confirmation process and hold lifetime appointments under Article III of the Constitution, making criminal charges against one a particularly noteworthy legal development.

It remains unclear whether Nelson has retained legal counsel or entered any plea in connection with the criminal charges. No statements attributed to Nelson or his representatives were included in the initial reports of the incident.

What Comes Next

The criminal case is expected to proceed through Idaho’s state court system, where Nelson will face the two charges stemming from the parking lot confrontation. Local prosecutors in Bonneville County will likely oversee the matter. It is also possible that federal judicial conduct authorities — including the 9th Circuit’s own judicial council — could open a separate review into Nelson’s conduct.

Idaho Falls residents and legal observers across the state will be watching closely as the case moves forward. Bonneville County News will continue covering developments in the case as court proceedings advance.
