Temperature Records Expected to Fall Across Eastern Idaho
Eastern Idaho is bracing for record-breaking heat this week, with temperatures climbing into the upper 80s and low 90s across Bonneville County and surrounding areas. A wind advisory has also been issued for Wednesday afternoon, when gusts could reach 55 mph.
Meteorologist Travis Wyatt from the National Weather Service in Pocatello told EastIdahoNews.com that Tuesday and Wednesday will bring the hottest temperatures of the year so far. Sunday marked the first time in 2026 that Pocatello reached 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Idaho Falls is expected to hit 88 degrees on Tuesday, which would break the previous record high of 87 degrees set in 2001 for May 12. On Wednesday, temperatures are forecast to remain in the upper 80s.
Pocatello could see even hotter conditions, with temperatures likely reaching 90 degrees on Wednesday. The current record for May 12 in Pocatello stands at 92 degrees, also set in 2001. Wyatt said the Gate City will likely tie or break that record.
High Wind Advisory Issued for Wednesday Afternoon
Along with the heat, residents across eastern Idaho should prepare for strong winds on Wednesday. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Wednesday afternoon through evening.
Wind gusts ranging from 45 to 55 mph are expected throughout the region. Wyatt said breezy conditions will begin around noon, but the strongest winds will occur between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Tuesday will also see breezy conditions, though not as severe as Wednesday’s forecast.
The chance of rain on Wednesday remains slight, and any precipitation would be minimal, according to Wyatt.
Cooler Weather Returns by Week’s End
The heat wave will be short-lived. By Thursday, temperatures are expected to drop significantly into the upper 60s and low 70s. Those cooler conditions will persist through the weekend.
Wind gusts will also diminish considerably after Wednesday evening.
What Comes Next
Residents should prepare for a dramatic temperature swing at the end of the week. Freezing temperatures are forecast for Sunday night into early Monday morning, with a frost advisory and freeze warning in effect overnight.
The sudden shift from record heat to below-freezing conditions highlights the unpredictable nature of Idaho’s spring weather. Residents with gardens or sensitive plants should take precautions ahead of the weekend freeze.
The National Weather Service continues to monitor conditions across eastern Idaho. Updated forecasts and live traffic camera feeds are available through the agency’s website.
