A head-on crash on US Highway 26 in Bonneville County claimed one life and sent five others to local hospitals on the evening of July 6, 2026.

The collision occurred at 6:45 p.m. near milepost 358, east of Ririe. A blue 2010 Hyundai Accent traveling westbound crossed into the eastbound lanes and struck a blue 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe head-on, according to Idaho State Police, which led the investigation.

The 32-year-old male driver of the Hyundai, from Idaho Falls, was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the impact.

Other Occupants Hospitalized

The Chevrolet Tahoe carried six occupants at the time of the crash. The vehicle was driven by a 49-year-old woman from Jackson, Wyoming. Riding with her were three adult passengers—a 24-year-old man from Jackson, a 53-year-old man from Mexico, and a 26-year-old woman from Mexico—along with a juvenile.

The 53-year-old male passenger sustained injuries serious enough to require air ambulance transport to a regional hospital. The remaining four occupants of the Tahoe were transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Emergency Response and Road Closure

Emergency personnel from multiple agencies responded to the scene. Idaho Transportation Department, Central Fire & EMS, Idaho Falls Fire & EMS, and the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office assisted State Police at the crash site.

US Highway 26 remained blocked to traffic for approximately four and a half hours while emergency responders attended to the injured and investigated the cause of the collision. The lengthy closure was necessary to clear the wreckage and allow investigators to document the scene.

The cause of why the Hyundai crossed the center line remains under investigation by Idaho State Police. Factors such as driver error, mechanical failure, or medical events are typically examined in such collisions, though authorities have not yet released specific details regarding the cause.

What Comes Next

Idaho State Police will continue their investigation into the circumstances that led to the head-on collision. Findings from the investigation may be made public in coming days or weeks as the case is reviewed.

Drivers on rural highways like US 26 are reminded to stay alert and maintain control of their vehicles, particularly during busy travel periods. Head-on collisions are among the most severe traffic crashes, often resulting in serious injury or death due to the combined force of vehicles traveling toward each other.

Bonneville County has experienced multiple serious traffic incidents in recent months, underscoring the importance of safe driving practices across the region.
