Fort Hall Reservation Fire Destroys Multiple Structures Along Hawthorne Road

Interstate highway

Firefighters on the Fort Hall Reservation in southeastern Idaho worked Friday afternoon to contain an active fire that destroyed multiple structures and spread into surrounding grassland along Hawthorne Road, between Cemetery Road and Edmo Road.

The Fort Hall Fire Department responded to the blaze, with personnel on scene working to contain the flames and assess the scope of the damage. As of Friday afternoon, the exact number of acres burned and the full extent of structural damage remained unclear.

Lawrence Wadsworth, identified as the Fort Hall Fire Incident Commander, confirmed the severity of the situation. “The fire has destroyed multiple structures and spread into a grass field, where multiple acres have burned,” Wadsworth told eastidahonews.com.

Roads Closed, Traffic Rerouted

Fort Hall police officers were deployed to the affected area to redirect traffic away from the fire zone. Hawthorne Road was closed beginning at its intersection with Lodge Road, with drivers being rerouted down Lodge Road as emergency crews worked the scene. Residences are located in the area, raising concerns about the fire’s proximity to occupied homes.

It remained unclear Friday afternoon whether any additional fire agencies from surrounding jurisdictions were assisting the Fort Hall Fire Department, and no information on potential injuries had been confirmed.

East Idaho Seeing Elevated Fire Activity

The Fort Hall fire adds to a period of heightened fire concern across the region. A separate wildfire elsewhere in eastern Idaho forced evacuations across two counties after burning more than 700 acres, underscoring the dry and volatile conditions that have gripped the area in recent weeks.

The Fort Hall Reservation, home to the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, sits in Bingham County south of Pocatello. The combination of dry summer conditions and grass fields in the area can allow fires to move quickly once ignited, complicating containment efforts.

What Comes Next

Investigators and fire personnel on scene were working to determine the cause of the blaze and establish a full damage assessment. Residents in the vicinity of Hawthorne Road and Lodge Road should expect continued road closures and traffic disruptions until crews fully contain the fire and clear the area. Anyone with information or concerns is encouraged to monitor updates from the Fort Hall Fire Department and tribal emergency management. As conditions in eastern Idaho remain dry, residents throughout the region are reminded to exercise caution with any potential ignition sources near grass or brush.
