Authorities have identified the driver involved in a Fort Hall pickup truck crash that claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy, as investigators work to determine whether criminal charges will follow.
The crash took place Saturday afternoon at approximately 2:45 p.m. in the Fort Hall Bottoms area near a local monument. The vehicle, a pickup truck, was carrying two occupants — driver Kennion Martin of Fort Hall and a teenage boy whose identity has not been publicly released.
Both individuals were ejected from the pickup during the crash. The 16-year-old boy died as a result of his injuries. Martin was transported by air ambulance for medical treatment. The severity of his condition was not specified in available information.
Alcohol May Have Played a Role
Investigators indicated that alcohol intoxication may have been a contributing factor in the crash. However, no charges against Martin have been announced, and it remains unclear whether prosecutors will pursue a criminal case. The investigation is ongoing.
The Fort Hall Police Department is leading the inquiry and has brought in Idaho State Police to assist with crash reconstruction — a technical process used to determine vehicle speed, trajectory, and other factors that help establish how a collision unfolded.
This latest fatality adds to a troubling pattern of serious traffic incidents on and near tribal land in the Fort Hall area. Earlier this month, a boy died and an adult was airlifted following a separate pickup rollover on Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Land near Fort Hall, raising concerns about roadway safety in the region. Fort Hall has also seen other recent incidents of violent nature, including a fatal shooting that resulted in an arrest.
What Comes Next
With Idaho State Police assisting in crash reconstruction, investigators will likely need additional time before a final report is completed. Whether Martin will face charges — potentially including vehicular manslaughter or driving under the influence — has not been determined. The teen victim’s family has not been publicly identified, and officials have not announced any memorial or community response at this time.
Anyone with information related to the crash is encouraged to contact the Fort Hall Police Department. Further updates are expected as the investigation moves forward.
