A coordinated rescue effort in Ammon on Sunday night saved the life of a motorcyclist who ended up face-down in a canal after losing control on Sunnyside Road. The swift action of an off-duty firefighter, his father, and several bystanders kept the driver alive until emergency crews arrived within minutes.
The motorcycle carrying two riders veered off the roadway in the 5000 block of Sunnyside Road near Ammon Cemetery around nightfall. Both occupants were ejected into the canal. The female passenger managed to crawl out of the water on her own, but the driver remained unresponsive and submerged face-down in the current.
Quick Action in the Water
Cael Grimmett, who was off-duty at the time, immediately jumped into the water and flipped the driver onto his back to open an airway. Within moments, his father Scott Grimmett, a fire marshal, entered the canal to stabilize the driver’s spine and hold him against the moving water. The rescue effort could have been dangerous for the responders themselves, given the canal’s current and steep banks.
Brady Wirick and other bystanders at the scene recognized the peril facing the Grimmetts and took action. They anchored the rescuers to the steep canal bank, providing critical stability as the father-and-son team worked to keep the driver’s head above water and secure his position. The coordination between untrained civilians and emergency personnel proved essential to preventing the situation from becoming a tragedy.

Idaho Falls Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene just three minutes after the initial incident. By that time, five bystanders and three Bonneville County Sheriff’s deputies had assembled at the canal to assist. The coordinated effort continued as professional responders secured the driver to a spine board and fitted him with a cervical collar before removing him from the water.
Both the driver and passenger were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Bryan Lovell reported that the driver’s injuries were non-life-threatening, a fortunate outcome given the circumstances of the crash and the time spent in the canal.
