A fatal head-on collision occurred early Friday morning on U.S. Highway 26 in Bonneville County, resulting in one death and injuries to two others. Idaho State Police are leading the investigation into the crash, which took place near the Wyoming border.
Crash Details
The incident happened at 8:07 a.m. on Friday, September 11, 2026, at mile post 397 of U.S. Highway 26, located east of Irwin. According to records from the Idaho State Police, a 1999 Porsche Carrera driven by a 71-year-old male from McKinney, Texas, was traveling eastbound when it crossed the center line.
The Porsche collided head-on with a westbound 2020 Ram 1500 pickup truck. The driver of the pickup was a 36-year-old male from Afton, Wyoming. He was accompanied by a 27-year-old female passenger, also from Afton.
The Porsche driver died at the scene. The occupants of the Ram were transported by ground ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities confirmed that all individuals involved in the crash were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.
Response and Investigation
Multiple agencies responded to the scene to manage traffic and assist with recovery efforts. The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, Swan Valley Fire, the Idaho Transportation Department, and Alpine Wyoming EMS assisted Idaho State Police during the operation.
The crash caused significant disruption to regional travel. U.S. Highway 26 remained blocked for approximately five hours while emergency crews worked to clear the vehicles and debris from the roadway.
Idaho State Police have not yet released information regarding potential contributing factors, such as weather conditions or driver impairment. The investigation into the cause of the crash remains open.
