Eastern Idaho Wildfire Forces Evacuations Across Two Counties as Blaze Expands to 700 Acres

A fast-moving wildfire in eastern Idaho has triggered evacuations across Cassia and Power counties, with officials ordering residents and campers to leave the affected area immediately as the blaze continues to expand.

The North Heglar Fire, which ignited in Cassia County southwest of American Falls, has grown to approximately 700 acres and crossed county lines into Power County as it spreads eastward. Evacuation orders are now in effect for portions of Rockland and recreational areas east of Heglar Canyon, according to emergency management officials.

Evacuation Zone Details

The evacuation zone in Rockland encompasses the area between Houtz Canyon and Sheep Canyon. Residents living in this zone have been ordered to leave their homes, and all camping in the affected region is prohibited. Emergency officials are directing anyone currently camping in the fire zone to depart the area without delay.

Authorities have issued a public safety notice asking residents and visitors to stay away from the fire perimeter entirely. Officials emphasized that keeping the area clear of civilian traffic is essential to ensure emergency personnel can access the zone safely and effectively combat the spreading flames.

Fire Movement and Current Status

The fire originated in the Cassia County foothills and has shown rapid movement toward the east, eventually crossing the mountain ridge into Power County. The dual-county nature of the evacuation reflects the fire’s unpredictable progression and the wide area now considered at risk.

Recreational areas in the evacuation zone are off-limits, and campers who had planned trips to the region should make alternative arrangements. The closure extends to all public use of campgrounds and outdoor facilities east of Heglar Canyon.

What Comes Next

Residents in the evacuation zone should monitor official emergency management channels for updates on fire containment efforts and any changes to evacuation orders. Those with questions about evacuation procedures or whether their property falls within the affected zone should contact local emergency management offices in Cassia or Power counties.

Wildfire season in eastern Idaho typically brings heightened fire danger during late summer months, particularly when conditions are dry. The North Heglar Fire is one of several incidents that can stretch firefighting resources thin across the region. Residents in fire-prone areas are encouraged to maintain defensible space around their homes and have evacuation plans in place.
