Chamber board taps experienced leader as interim chief amid leadership transition

The Greater Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce has named Steve Hunter as interim chief executive officer, the organization announced following the departure of Paul Baker on July 3, 2026.

Hunter, who previously held the CEO position and has served on the Chamber’s board of directors, brings extensive background in business leadership and organizational management. The appointment comes as the Chamber navigates a period of administrative transition and addresses questions about its operational practices.

Leadership Change and Context

Baker’s resignation followed public discussion and online speculation surrounding his involvement with the Portneuf Valley Soccer Club, a separate organization that has faced scrutiny from law enforcement. The Bannock County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the soccer club for potential financial irregularities, while an internal forensic audit at that organization uncovered concerns about its finances.

The Chamber’s Board of Directors moved to authorize an independent financial audit by Wipfli, a professional accounting and consulting firm, to ensure transparency and verify the soundness of the Chamber’s own financial position. In a reassurance to members, Chamber leadership stated that the organization’s finances remain secure and are not under investigation.

Hunter’s Background and Vision

Hunter brings a track record of involvement with the Chamber spanning many years. His previous roles as business owner, board member, and former CEO position him to understand both the internal operations of the organization and the broader business community it serves in the Idaho Falls area and Bonneville County.

In a statement about his appointment, Hunter expressed confidence in the organization’s mission and value to the community. “I have believed in the value and mission of the Greater Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce for many years and have been actively involved throughout that time,” he said. “It has been a tremendous asset to both my previous business and to me personally, and I am honored to have the opportunity to serve the organization during this transition.”

The Chamber’s board emphasized that Hunter’s experience, leadership stability, and institutional knowledge make him well-suited to guide the organization through the current period of change. His familiarity with the Chamber’s operations, membership base, and regional business landscape positions him to maintain continuity while the board addresses governance and financial review matters.

What Comes Next

The independent financial audit by Wipfli is expected to provide the Chamber with a comprehensive review of its financial practices and internal controls. The board has signaled its commitment to transparency and accountability to its membership as it completes the audit process and evaluates longer-term leadership options.

Hunter’s tenure as interim CEO will likely extend through the completion of the financial review and the board’s search for a permanent chief executive, though no timeline for that decision has been publicly announced. The Chamber continues to serve as a central organization for business networking, advocacy, and economic development initiatives across Idaho Falls, Ammon, and the broader Bonneville County region.

Members and community partners can direct questions about the transition and Chamber operations to the organization through its official channels as leadership works to restore full confidence in the organization’s governance and financial stewardship.
