High Flight Heroes Hosts Unforgettable Island Park Ride for Idaho Veterans and First Responders

ISLAND PARK, Idaho — Eight veterans and first responders from across the country descended on Island Park earlier this month for a backcountry snowmobiling experience that organizers describe as “throttle therapy” — a chance to unplug, recharge, and reconnect through the power of Idaho’s legendary outdoors.

The annual ride was hosted by High Flight Heroes, a nonprofit foundation established in 2023 with a singular mission: to give back to the men and women who have dedicated their lives to serving their country and communities. Participants for this year’s event were nominated and selected based on their service records, traveling from Oklahoma, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington to take part in the multi-day backcountry experience in one of East Idaho’s most iconic outdoor destinations.

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience in East Idaho’s Backcountry

Island Park, located in Fremont County and situated along the scenic corridor connecting East Idaho to Yellowstone National Park, is widely regarded as one of the premier snowmobiling destinations in the American West. The region’s expansive trail systems, deep powder snowpack, and dramatic mountain terrain made it the ideal backdrop for the High Flight Heroes event.

Riders navigated world-class trails through some of the most breathtaking backcountry terrain the state of Idaho has to offer. Photographs from the event captured a memorable moment in which the group paused on the trail to hold a large American flag aloft — a striking image that quickly drew attention and admiration from supporters of the organization.

Trae Span, founder and president of High Flight Heroes and a U.S. Air Force officer, explained the heart behind the nonprofit’s work.

“This is a way to give back to the military and first responders who have given so much to their country and communities,” Span said. “Each of us in the organization has personally benefited from being in the outdoors. Our focus is delivering a once-in-a-lifetime backcountry experience — something people will never forget.”

Span, also described as an avid outdoorsman, founded High Flight Heroes after recognizing the profound healing potential that immersive outdoor experiences can provide for those who have carried the weight of military service or emergency response work. The organization operates entirely on a volunteer basis, meaning every dollar raised goes directly toward supporting participants and programming.

Nonprofit Awards New Snowmobile to Selected Veteran or First Responder Each Year

Beyond the annual ride itself, High Flight Heroes has built one of its most celebrated traditions around a yearly snowmobile giveaway. Each year, the organization selects one veteran or first responder to receive a brand-new snowmobile — a tangible, lasting reminder of the community’s gratitude for their sacrifice and service.

The giveaway underscores the organization’s broader philosophy: that honoring those who serve goes beyond a handshake or a certificate. High Flight Heroes aims to create experiences and opportunities that carry real meaning long after the event concludes, fostering camaraderie, mental wellness, and a renewed sense of purpose among participants.

Volunteers who make the organization run year-round are drawn from a network of outdoor enthusiasts, veterans, and community supporters who share a commitment to service. That volunteer-driven model keeps the organization lean and mission-focused, ensuring that the people who show up to ride are always the top priority.

The 2026 Island Park event drew participants representing a broad cross-section of American service — military veterans and civilian first responders alike — reflecting the organization’s inclusive vision of who deserves recognition and renewal. For many participants, the journey to Island Park represented not only a rare adventure but also a meaningful connection with fellow service members and responders who understand experiences that can be difficult to put into words.

Idaho’s outdoor landscapes have long served as a backdrop for healing and community-building, and events like the High Flight Heroes ride reinforce the state’s role as more than just a recreational destination. For those who arrived from states as far away as Oklahoma and Washington, the snowfields and mountain trails of Island Park offered something quietly powerful: a reminder that their service is seen, valued, and celebrated.
