IDAHO FALLS — A Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office detective was recognized Wednesday for his dedication to protecting children, receiving Idaho’s “Hometown Hero” Award during a ceremony held in Idaho Falls.

Detective Korey Payne was presented the award in recognition of his exemplary service in combating child exploitation. Along with the honor, Payne also received a Letter of Commendation acknowledging his contributions to the work.

Ceremony Draws Law Enforcement, Federal Officials

The award presentation brought together members of both local and federal law enforcement. Bonneville County Sheriff Sam Hulse attended the ceremony, as did Justin Pasket, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Idaho. Payne’s wife, Kandace, was also present for the recognition.

The presence of a federal prosecutor underscores the collaborative nature of child exploitation investigations, which routinely involve coordination between local sheriff’s detectives and federal agencies. Such cases often require significant dedication and specialized expertise from investigators who work to identify and hold accountable those who prey on children.

A Commitment to Community Safety

Child exploitation investigations are among the most demanding assignments in law enforcement, requiring detectives to work through disturbing evidence while building legally sound cases. Recognition through awards like the “Hometown Hero” designation highlights the contributions of officers whose work often takes place outside of public view.

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office serves Idaho Falls, Ammon, and communities throughout Bonneville County, handling a broad range of criminal investigations alongside patrol operations. Detective Payne’s recognition reflects the ongoing commitment of the office to pursuing cases that protect the county’s most vulnerable residents.

Law enforcement at both the local and federal levels has increasingly prioritized child exploitation cases in recent years, with task forces and inter-agency partnerships helping to expand investigative capacity across Idaho. The involvement of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Wednesday’s ceremony signals the value federal prosecutors place on the work of local detectives who bring these cases forward.
