Retired Idaho Falls Firefighter Selected for Chief Position
Jon Perry, a firefighter who recently retired from the Idaho Falls Fire Department, has been chosen to lead the Wenatchee Valley Fire Department in Washington state. The selection was announced Tuesday by the department’s board of commissioners following an extensive interview process.
Perry, an East Wenatchee native who was born and raised in the area, will replace outgoing Chief Brian Brett, who is retiring from the position. The job offer comes after Perry concluded his career with the Idaho Falls Fire Department this past fall.
Dave Fennell, chairman of the Wenatchee Valley Fire Department Board of Commissioners, said the selection came down to three finalists who underwent a full day of interviews on Monday. The interview panels included citizen groups, labor representatives, union personnel, administrative staff, and the board of commissioners.
Experience and Education Cited as Key Factors
Fennell emphasized that Perry brings extensive experience and education to the role, despite never having served as a fire chief before. The board evaluated candidates based on their professional backgrounds, administrative management capabilities, and service records.
The other two finalists for the position were WVFD Deputy Chief Andy Davidson and Kristan Maurer from Clark County Fire District 6. Fennell acknowledged that all three candidates brought substantial experience to the selection process, but the board ultimately determined Perry offered the strongest combination of experience and educational qualifications.
Board Sought Outside Perspective
According to Fennell, the board of commissioners deliberately sought a fire chief who could bring an outside perspective to the department’s leadership. This approach reflects a strategic decision to bring fresh insights and potentially new approaches to department operations and management.
Perry’s selection represents a homecoming of sorts, as he returns to the region where he grew up to take on the leadership role. His career with the Idaho Falls Fire Department provided him with the administrative and operational experience the board was seeking, while his roots in the Wenatchee Valley area give him familiarity with the community he will serve.
What Comes Next
The commissioners have extended the job offer to Perry, though formal acceptance and start date details have not yet been announced. Once Perry officially accepts and begins his tenure, he will be responsible for overseeing department operations, personnel management, and strategic planning for fire and emergency services in the Wenatchee Valley.
The transition period will also involve working with outgoing Chief Brett to ensure continuity of leadership and operations. Perry will inherit responsibility for a department that serves both Wenatchee and East Wenatchee communities, requiring coordination with multiple jurisdictions and emergency service partners throughout the region.
The hiring process drew candidates from across the Pacific Northwest, reflecting the competitive nature of fire chief positions and the appeal of leading a department in the growing Wenatchee Valley area.
