IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — The Idaho Falls Chukars held a commanding lead through three innings Tuesday night at Melaleuca Field, then watched it evaporate in one of the more remarkable collapses of the early Pioneer League season. The Ogden Raptors rallied to win 22-16, extending Idaho Falls’ losing streak to six games.
The Chukars entered the middle frames looking in control, holding a 10-2 advantage after three innings. But the bullpen unraveled in historic fashion. Ogden poured in 10 runs in the sixth inning alone, followed by five more in the seventh and three in the eighth, turning a comfortable Chukars lead into a 22-16 final in favor of the visiting Raptors.
Bullpen Collapse Defines the Evening
Starter Ian Lanik had a difficult outing, surrendering runs in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings before exiting with 5-plus innings pitched. He allowed seven hits, six runs — five earned — and two walks while recording just one strikeout. It was a performance that kept the Chukars competitive but left the door open for Ogden’s offense.
The real damage came from Idaho Falls’ relief corps. Three relievers were needed just to record three outs in the sixth inning as the Raptors batted through the lineup. Over three total innings of bullpen work, five arms combined to allow 14 hits, four walks, and 16 runs — 15 earned. That kind of pitching output is difficult to overcome regardless of how well the offense performs. Robert Estrada provided a small measure of dignity with a perfect ninth inning.
Offense Couldn’t Overcome the Damage
Idaho Falls’ bats were not silent. The Chukars finished with 13 hits and 16 runs, numbers that would win most Pioneer League games on most nights. Ty Dooley and Justin Trimble each hit home runs. Dooley was the offensive standout of the evening, going 2-for-the-game with six RBIs. DJ Walker added two hits and four RBIs of his own.
The problem was that the pitching staff allowed the Raptors — who came into Tuesday’s game at 5-8 — to post 22 runs on their own. It was a high-scoring affair that ultimately hurt Idaho Falls more than Ogden.
The loss dropped the Chukars to 1-11 on the season, one of the worst records in the Pioneer League. The team has now dropped six consecutive games, and Tuesday’s loss was particularly difficult given how dominant the early innings appeared.
The Raptors-Chukars series at Melaleuca Field runs six games in total, with game two scheduled for Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Chukars will be looking to snap their skid in front of the home crowd. What Comes Next
The Chukars return to action Wednesday at Melaleuca Field against Ogden, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. With a 1-11 record and a six-game skid, Idaho Falls will need to find consistency from its pitching staff if it hopes to turn the season around. Four more games remain in this home series after Wednesday, giving the Chukars multiple opportunities to get back in the win column before the series concludes.
