Officials issue overdose spike notice for Bonneville County

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — Health and public safety officials in Bonneville County have issued a formal overdose spike notice following a sharp increase in drug overdose incidents across eastern Idaho, urging residents to take immediate precautions and know where to find help.

The Eastern Idaho Public Health and Safety Team announced the alert after tracking a notable rise in overdose cases over a 48-hour period. The team is asking community members to take several steps to reduce harm, including securing prescription and over-the-counter medications in locked storage and properly disposing of any drugs that are unused or past their expiration date.

Naloxone Availability and Emergency Response

Central to the alert is a push for more residents to carry naloxone — sold under the brand name Narcan — a medication that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and buy critical time for emergency responders to arrive. Officials stressed that naloxone should be seen as a first step, not a substitute for emergency services.

“If you suspect an overdose, call 911 right away, even if you administer naloxone,” the alert stated.

Free Narcan kits are available at the Center for Hope, with distribution locations in both Idaho Falls and Rexburg. Residents in need of a kit are encouraged to visit either location at no cost.

Officials also urged community members to check in on friends and family, particularly if there is any concern about a person’s well-being or substance use. Early intervention and social connection remain among the most effective tools in preventing overdose deaths, public health experts say.

Where to Find Help and Treatment Referrals

Residents seeking support or treatment options have access to several confidential resources. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline provides around-the-clock mental health and crisis support, and can be reached by simply dialing or texting 9-8-8.

For substance use treatment referrals specifically, officials highlighted HELP4U, a free and confidential service that connects individuals with local treatment options. To use the service, residents can text their five-digit ZIP code to 435748 (spelled out: HELP4U) from any mobile phone.

The Eastern Idaho Public Health and Safety Team is a coalition of local law enforcement, emergency response, and public health agencies working together to monitor and address overdose trends throughout the region. Member agencies include the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, the Bonneville County Coroner’s Office, the Idaho Falls Police Department, the Idaho Falls Fire Department, Idaho State Police, and Eastern Idaho Public Health.

The group meets on a regular basis to analyze overdose data and coordinate community-wide efforts to reduce preventable deaths. The multi-agency structure allows officials to share information quickly and issue alerts like this one when patterns suggest a heightened public risk.

What Comes Next

Public health officials are expected to continue monitoring overdose trends in Bonneville County and across eastern Idaho in the coming days. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, talk openly with family members about the risks of opioid use, and take advantage of free naloxone distribution while supplies are available at the Center for Hope locations in Idaho Falls and Rexburg.

Anyone seeking more information on overdose prevention, treatment referrals, or crisis support can contact the 988 Lifeline or text their ZIP code to HELP4U (435748). For statewide public health and policy updates, readers can follow ongoing coverage at Idaho News.
