INL gives students a hands-on look at STEM careers

Idaho National Laboratory Opens Doors to Eighth Graders for STEM Career Exploration

Idaho Falls, Idaho — Eighth grade students from communities across eastern Idaho recently visited Idaho National Laboratory to explore hands-on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers during the My Amazing Future event.

Students traveled from Idaho Falls, Blackfoot, Firth, Fort Hall, and Pocatello to take part in activities held at INL’s Energy Innovation Laboratory. The event gave young people a direct look at the kinds of careers available in the region’s growing energy and research sector.

Hands-On Learning at a World-Class Facility

The My Amazing Future program is designed to connect middle school students with real-world STEM applications before they begin making high school course decisions. By visiting INL’s research facilities in person, participants got a clearer picture of what careers in nuclear energy, engineering, and applied science can look like — and what preparation those paths require.

Idaho National Laboratory, located west of Idaho Falls along Highway 20, is one of the nation’s premier nuclear research facilities and one of the largest employers in Bonneville County. Exposing area students to INL’s work at a young age has long been seen as a way to build a local pipeline of future scientists and engineers who might one day return to work in eastern Idaho.

Building the Next Generation of Idaho’s Workforce

Events like My Amazing Future reflect a broader push in eastern Idaho to align public education with the region’s dominant industries. With INL continuing to expand its research mission — including work on next-generation nuclear reactor designs and clean energy technologies — demand for local STEM talent is expected to grow in coming years.

The involvement of students from multiple school districts, including communities on the Fort Hall Reservation, suggests the program is reaching beyond the immediate Idaho Falls area to give a wider cross-section of eastern Idaho students access to career opportunities they may not otherwise encounter.

Parents and school officials across the region have increasingly supported efforts to bring students face-to-face with potential employers early in their academic careers. Whether through school field trips, career fairs, or programs like My Amazing Future, giving students a tangible sense of what their futures could look like in their own backyard remains a priority for many local educators. What Comes Next

INL and its partner organizations have not announced the next scheduled My Amazing Future event, but the program has historically welcomed student groups on a recurring basis. Families and educators interested in future opportunities are encouraged to contact Idaho National Laboratory’s community outreach office directly for information on upcoming student programs and tours.
