Man accused of firing 13 rounds at officers claimed he shot neighbor, court records say

RIRIE, Idaho — Court documents filed in Jefferson County detail a Friday night incident in which a 35-year-old man allegedly opened fire on law enforcement officers after reportedly shooting at a neighbor inside a Ririe home.

Israel Joel Hughes faces three felony charges following the incident, which unfolded around 9:30 p.m. near the 500 block of 1st East in Ririe. Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched after a caller reported a neighbor — later identified as Hughes — had fired shots at their residence. The caller told dispatchers that gunfire was still audible after they had retreated to their home’s basement. The caller’s husband had armed himself as the situation escalated.

Officers Take Fire; Suspect Exits With Hands Raised

Given the severity of the call, Idaho State Police troopers were requested to assist, and officers from the Rigby Police Department also responded. Law enforcement established a perimeter around both the caller’s residence and Hughes’ home. While deputies and troopers were notifying nearby residents to shelter in place, Hughes stepped outside his home and set down a black box. Officers ordered him to show his hands, but he retreated back inside.

Shortly after 9:45 p.m., multiple shots rang out from within the home. Some rounds were fired directly through the front door. Officers reported hearing what they described as a “crack wizz” as the rounds passed near them. Investigators estimate approximately 13 rounds were directed toward officers during the incident.

By roughly 10 p.m., Hughes emerged from the home with his hands raised. Officers issued commands, and he was taken into custody without further incident. During a search following his arrest, Hughes told a deputy that he had “shot the neighbor in the head” and, when asked to confirm, said he had. While being transported to the Jefferson County Jail, Hughes reportedly told officers he was sorry for firing at them.

Charges, Hearing Date, and Potential Sentence

Court documents do not specify whether any injuries were sustained by officers or the neighbor during the incident. Hughes was charged with felony discharge of a firearm at an inhabited dwelling, felony aggravated assault, and felony aggravated assault upon certain personnel. He is scheduled to appear before Magistrate Judge Faren Eddins for a preliminary hearing on May 21 at 1:30 p.m. If convicted on all charges, Hughes could face up to 30 years in prison.

As with all criminal cases, Hughes is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
