Possible record high temperatures and wind usher in new week

Record or Near-Record High Temperatures, Gusty Winds Expected Across East Idaho This Week

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — East Idaho residents should prepare for a stretch of unseasonably warm temperatures and gusty winds to open the week, with record or near-record high temperatures possible through Wednesday before a cooling system moves in later in the week.

Monday will bring a combination of warmth and wind to the region, with afternoon highs expected to climb to around 84 degrees under partly sunny skies. Wind speeds are forecast in the 17 to 22 mph range for much of the day, with gusts potentially reaching as high as 32 mph. Those gusts could briefly approach wind advisory thresholds near Craters of the Moon and the Idaho National Laboratory, two areas west of Idaho Falls that are particularly susceptible to elevated wind events.

Overnight Monday into Tuesday, winds are expected to persist before gradually easing, with a low temperature settling near 47 degrees under partly cloudy skies.

Temperatures Climb Toward Potential Records Mid-Week

Tuesday brings a noticeable warmup, with highs expected to approach 87 degrees under sunny skies and calmer wind conditions compared to Monday. The overnight low Tuesday will be around 52 degrees under mostly clear skies.

Wednesday looks to be the warmest day of the stretch, with a high near 89 degrees and mostly sunny conditions. That would push temperatures into territory where daily records could be threatened. A mostly clear Wednesday night will offer a brief respite before the pattern shifts.

Starting Wednesday evening, a weather system is expected to push into the region, bringing cooler temperatures and chances for precipitation that will extend through the remainder of the week. Residents who need to conduct outdoor work or activities would be well served to take advantage of Tuesday and Wednesday before conditions deteriorate.

Limited Shower Chances Near Island Park, Yellowstone, and the Tetons

While most of the region will remain dry through the early part of the week, a weak low-pressure system nudging into the area Monday afternoon could spark isolated shower activity near Island Park and into the Yellowstone and Teton areas. Even in those locations, precipitation reaching the ground will be limited — forecasters note that any rain that develops will most likely fall as virga, a meteorological phenomenon in which rain evaporates before making contact with the surface below.

The rest of Bonneville County and the broader East Idaho region should see no meaningful precipitation until the pattern change arrives Wednesday evening.

The weekend’s transition into this warm spell has already been notable. Sunday night saw breezy conditions with winds ranging from 9 to 16 mph and gusts reaching as high as 24 mph. Overnight lows hovered around 45 degrees beneath partly cloudy skies, setting the stage for the warmer, windier week ahead.

Residents across Idaho Falls, Ammon, Iona, and Ucon are encouraged to stay aware of wind conditions Monday, particularly those with outdoor structures, agricultural operations, or travel plans along exposed corridors near the INL and Craters of the Moon areas.

As the community heads into the week, there are also several local events on the calendar worth planning around. Bonneville County is hosting an annual ceremony to honor fallen heroes in the coming days — organizers may want to monitor wind and temperature forecasts as outdoor gatherings are scheduled.

What Comes Next

The warm and breezy pattern dominating the early part of the week is expected to give way to a cooler, wetter stretch beginning Wednesday evening as the next weather system arrives. Precipitation chances will increase for the latter half of the week, offering some relief from the heat but potentially complicating outdoor plans for the upcoming weekend. Residents should monitor updated forecasts as the system approaches and timing becomes clearer.
