74-year-old Bonneville County man killed in 2-car crash Friday

Bonneville County Man, 74, Dies in Idaho Falls Intersection Crash

A Bonneville County man died Friday afternoon following a two-vehicle collision at a busy Idaho Falls intersection, and two other individuals were hospitalized with serious injuries, according to a news release from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of N. 5th West and 81st North, also known as Riverfront Drive. Doyle Barney, 74, was behind the wheel of a Chrysler van traveling southbound on 5th West when a Toyota Corolla heading eastbound on 81st North struck the vehicle. Deputies noted the Toyota driver failed to stop at a posted stop sign before entering the intersection.

Barney was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies and paramedics worked to save him, but their efforts were unsuccessful, the sheriff’s office said.

Two Others Hospitalized With Significant Injuries

A 72-year-old woman who had been riding as a passenger in Barney’s van was taken to the hospital, as was the 20-year-old male driver of the Toyota. Both were described as suffering from significant injuries. No update on their conditions had been released as of Saturday.

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the crash remains under active investigation, and additional details were not available at the time of publication.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities have not released information regarding potential charges or citations in connection with the collision. The intersection of N. 5th West and Riverfront Drive serves as a heavily traveled corridor in the northern Idaho Falls area.

This crash comes during a period of active public safety response across Bonneville County. Earlier this week, search and rescue teams were called to respond at 17 Mile Cave in Bonneville County, and the sheriff’s office has also asked the public for help locating a missing teenager in recent days.

What Comes Next

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into the circumstances of the fatal crash. Authorities have not indicated a timeline for completing the inquiry or releasing additional findings. Anyone with information about the collision is encouraged to contact the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office directly.
